Some businesses begin with a business plan. Mine began with a childhood obsession with making things - paper beads, wire and glass beads, anything I could turn into something wearable.  That instinct never really went away, even after 27 years working a 9 to 5 office job.

I spent those years working as Academic Secretary at a school on the Isle of Wight - spreadsheets, timetables, data, reports. I was good at it. But at some point the gap between what I was doing and what I actually wanted to be doing became impossible to ignore. So I left, without a business plan and without a clear idea of what I was doing, to make jewellery.

I'm largely self-taught, currently completing a jewellery diploma, and I still approach most new techniques the same way I always have: give it a go and see what happens. Sometimes a piece turns out exactly as I'd planned. Sometimes the silver melts and I start again. That uncertainty is part of what I love about it.

What still surprises me, even now, is how a plain flat sheet of silver can be pierced, formed, joined and shaped into something that bears no resemblance to where it started. I love watching solder flow when two pieces join, there's something almost mesmerising about it. The finished piece was always in there somewhere. The making is the process of finding it.Every piece I sell is made by me, in my workshop on the Isle of Wight, using 100% recycled sterling silver. Made to order, packaged without plastic, and hallmarked at the London Assay Office where the weight requires it.
